Cais 68 stands 80 metres above the sea, opposite one of the oldest viewpoints in town, on the hill east of Funchal. The old town — and the Barreirinha bathing complex beside it — is a 7-minute walk downhill, and the marina is 15–20 minutes on foot.
The walk back is uphill: most guests take an Uber or Bolt back, for about €5–7. Madeira airport (FNC) is 20 minutes by car, and we arrange the transfer for one to six people. Palheiro Golf is ten minutes by car.
In 2023 the house was expanded and renovated from top to bottom, keeping the island’s traditional architecture. The door hardware and the bedroom lighting are by Buster + Punch, London. The bed linen and towels are Torres Novas 1845, Portugal. The table is laid with Vista Alegre Lazuli, a house founded in 1824, and the glasses are SUPERGLAS by koziol — acrylic, made not to break. Wallpapers and textured fabrics finish the rooms.
Cais 68 has six outdoor spaces, and each of them has a name. The Miradouro is a viewpoint under a bougainvillea pergola, and it holds the breeze in the afternoon. The Levada Lounge follows the old irrigation channel that once crossed the hillside — the water still runs through it, and you hear it before you see it. The Sun Deck faces south and keeps the light from late morning onwards. The Plunge Pool is mineral water, held at 30 °C (86 °F) in January as in July. The Fire Pit is where the evening tends to end. And the Al Fresco Dining Area is where breakfast is laid whenever the weather allows.
Cais 68 stands on one of the oldest roads out of Funchal to the east, and has been in the family for five generations. The name is the quay — cais — down in the bay, where the ships come in; you watch them from the house. The idea was that people would have somewhere of their own to tie up at the end of the day.
The concierge, Nava, lives on the property and is here at every hour. Breakfast is cooked when you ask for it, not when a kitchen opens. A dinner reservation, a guide for the levadas, a car to the airport — none of it has to be arranged in advance. It is simply asked for.
